"Big Government Definition: A negative term used to describe a government or public sector that is considered to be too large.
More: It is a term that is often used to criticize governments which spend a lot of money on social welfare issues."
From BBC Learning English
"Big government is a pejorative term for a government or public sector that is considered excessively large or unconstitutionally involved in certain areas of public policy or the private sector. The term may also be used specifically in relation to government policies that attempt to regulate matters considered to be private or personal such as private sexual behavior or individual food choices[1] - similar to the British term 'nanny state' The term has also been used in the context of the United States to define a dominant federal government that seeks to control the authority of local institutions—an example being the overriding of state authority in favor of federal legislation."

Now, for my definition of Big Government: I have a simple and a more descriptive definition of Big Government. My simple definition of Big Government is any government (regardless of jurisdiction or place) that tries to do too much and generally tries to do things that are unconstitutional.
My longer definition of Big Government is government that is run by people who think that average people are essentially morons who aren't capable of managing either their own personal or economic (perhaps to dumb to even blow their nose of brush their hair for themselves) affairs for themselves and doesn't trust people to make moral decisions for themselves and for people that depend on them. And therefor the Big Governmentalist believes that you need a government big enough to manage people's lives for them, especially average people's lives for them.
If you are familiar with the New-Left (Socialists and Communists) and the New-Right (Nationalists and Fundamentalists) in America, two political factions that this blog has covered a lot, you might think that they're arch-rivals and sworn enemies of each other. Sort of like the Anglo-Saxons versus the American-Indians in the 17 and 1800s today, or Israeli-Nationalists and Palestinian-Islamists today.
But if you look at these two political factions today, you might think they're more like Al and Peggy Bundy from the great American sitcom Married With Children who were a long-term married couple who on the surface you might think these people hate each other. Or Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor from the movie Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf.
But if you look into their relationship deeper, you see that they have enough in common to stay together, which is their love for Big Government. In the Socialist-Left case, a government big enough to manage everyone's lives for them. In the Nationalist or Christian-Right's case, a government big enough to see that everyone is living a moral, traditional, and American patriotic way of life, in their view.
The New-Left and New-Right don't hate Big Government, they make love to it every night, and perhaps during the morning and afternoon as well. They are just in love with different forms of Big Government. And this page and a lot of what this blog is about is promoting a fiscally responsible, constitutional, and effective, limited government. And talking about the dangers of Big Government, whether it comes from the Far-Left or Far-Right.
